The Clubhouse is the Behavioral Intervention Association's (http://www.bia4autism.org) after-school program. Once a week, children between the ages of 5 and 12, who have communication and social challenges, meet and engage in fun activities to practice different social skills. The Explorers focus on skills such as staying with the group, greetings, turn taking, participating independently in activities, and brief exchanges with peers. The Adventurers focus on skills such as initiating and maintaining conversations, perspective taking, and negotiating with peers.

A Rainbow of Colors: Contact Paper Collage (The Explorers)

Today, we practiced following and giving directions.
  • Warm-up game “Rainbow Bowling”: The students engaged in a bowling game and practiced cheering for their friends.  Everyone did a wonderful job waiting his or her turn.

    • Small Group Art Project “Rainbow Collage”: Students created a collage by attaching a variety of art materials in a rainbow of colors (e.g., tissue paper, fabric, etc.) onto contact paper (sticky side up).

      • Adapted Red Light/Green Light “Reaching the Rainbow”: The goal was to reach the rainbow. Signs showed what movements the group was supposed to follow (e.g., jumping, flying).  Students took turns giving directions with the help of the signs.
