The Clubhouse is the Behavioral Intervention Association's (http://www.bia4autism.org) after-school program. Once a week, children between the ages of 5 and 12, who have communication and social challenges, meet and engage in fun activities to practice different social skills. The Explorers focus on skills such as staying with the group, greetings, turn taking, participating independently in activities, and brief exchanges with peers. The Adventurers focus on skills such as initiating and maintaining conversations, perspective taking, and negotiating with peers.

A Rainbow of Colors: Rainbow Tie Dye Baby Wipes (The Explorers)

Today, we focused on cooperative play and teamwork.
  • Small group Art Project “Rainbow Tie Dye Baby Wipes”: Rubber bands were tied around different sections of a baby wipe. Students colored the baby wipes with watercolors. When the rubber bands were removed beautiful patterns appeared.
  •  “Rainbow Treasure Hunt” : Students completed a variety of tasks together in order to find a treasure.
  1. Bean Bag Toss: The students tossed bean bags into different colored hula hoops. If they were successful and hit the targets, they earned points (e.g., 3 points for tossing the bean bag into the red hula hoop). Together, they had to collect 30 points.
  2. Rainbow Tower: Students partnered up and carried a bin with blocks together. Then they built a tower using the blocks they had carried.
  3. Rainbow Dig: Students looked for rainbows that were hidden in the sandbox. The rainbows were their tokens that opened the treasure bin.

A Rainbow of Colors: Rainbow Balloon Volleyball (The Adventurers)

Warm-up Game “Rainbow Balloon Volleyball”: Students were divided into two equal teams with all players seated on the floor. A line was placed on the floor to separate the two teams. The students hit a balloon back and forth across the line. Balloons were added until all the colors of the rainbow were represented in the game. Everyone loved this new game.

A Rainbow of Colors: Tissue Paper Collage (The Explorers)

1.     Warm-up game “Freeze Dance”: Students danced around when the music played; and froze when the music stopped. Everyone did a fantastic job listening to the music.

2.     Small Group Art Project “Rainbow Tissue Color Mix”: Students were divided into small groups. Students used starch to stick tissue shapes to white paper. By overlapping shapes they created new colors (e.g., bright blue over yellow to create green).

3.     “Rainbow Fishing”: Students fished for paper swatches in the colors of a rainbow. At the end, students took turns arranging the color swatches to create a rainbow.

    • Small Group Art Project “Rainbow Collage”: Students created a collage by attaching a variety of art materials in a rainbow of colors (e.g., tissue paper, fabric, etc.) onto contact paper (sticky side up).

      • Adapted Red Light/Green Light “Reaching the Rainbow”: The goal was to reach the rainbow. Signs showed what movements the group was supposed to follow (e.g., jumping, flying).  Students took turns giving directions with the help of the signs.

A Rainbow of Colors: Rainbow Salt & Rice (The Explorers)

Today, it was all about cooperation.

        • “Rainbow Collage”: Students used different art supplies (e.g., tissue paper, glitter, paint) to create a rainbow collage together.

“A Rainbow of Colors”: We filled big bins with colored rock salt, salt and rice to create a rainbow. We also added different containers (e.g., funnels, bottles) as well as hidden small objects. The students were encouraged to engage in cooperative play (e.g., filling a bottle together with the help of a funnel).  They enjoyed looking for the hidden treasures.
