BIA Clubhouse: Where Friendship Rules: November 2010

The Clubhouse is the Behavioral Intervention Association's (http://www.bia4autism.org) after-school program. Once a week, children between the ages of 5 and 12, who have communication and social challenges, meet and engage in fun activities to practice different social skills. The Explorers focus on skills such as staying with the group, greetings, turn taking, participating independently in activities, and brief exchanges with peers. The Adventurers focus on skills such as initiating and maintaining conversations, perspective taking, and negotiating with peers.

My 5 Senses: Rock Salt Art (The Adventurers)

Today, we focused on teamwork and negotiating with our friends.

Featured Activity “Rock Salt Mosaic”: Students filled a Ziploc bag with rock salt and added food coloring. They shook the bag until the salt was dyed and the color was evenly distributed. Then, they created a colorful mosaic by applying glue to a cardboard and by sprinkling the colored salt onto the glue.

Instant Volcano: Students added vinegar to baking soda and watched our volcano erupt. To make our flow of “lava” look real, we added red Kool-Aid powder to the mixture.
