The Clubhouse is the Behavioral Intervention Association's (http://www.bia4autism.org) after-school program. Once a week, children between the ages of 5 and 12, who have communication and social challenges, meet and engage in fun activities to practice different social skills. The Explorers focus on skills such as staying with the group, greetings, turn taking, participating independently in activities, and brief exchanges with peers. The Adventurers focus on skills such as initiating and maintaining conversations, perspective taking, and negotiating with peers.

A Rainbow of Colors: Bozo Buckets with a Twist (The Adventurers)

Rainbow Treasure Hunt: Students had to complete a variety of tasks together in order to find a treasure.
  • Bowling: Students collected points for each knocked over pin. When they reached the magic number 50, they could move on to the next task.
  • Bozo Buckets (with a twist): The students tossed balls into the buckets. If they were successful and hit the target, they drew a question out of the bucket (e.g., “Ask your friends what games they like to play.”).  The game continued until all questions were answered.
  • Rainbow Collage: Students created a collage by attaching a variety of art materials in a rainbow of colors (e.g., tissue paper, fabric, beads) onto contact paper (sticky side up).

  • Students looked for rainbows that were hidden in the backyard. The rainbows functioned as their tokens that opened the treasure bin.
